This year I’ve taken on a personal project to push myself creatively by exploring black & white photography.  First up: a rare use of studio lighting… made even more rare because this is a #selfie.

What to Wear: Family Holiday Session


‘Tis the season for family holiday sessions!

One question I’m often asked is how to dress for a family portrait.  I always have the same response: Remember you are not a team, you’re a family.  This is my simple way of saying please, please, please do not arrive all wearing the same thing!  Nothing screams ‘awkward family photo’ more than everyone wearing the exact same shirt and matching pants.  You know what I’m talking about:  black long sleeve shirt/blue jeans, white button down shirt/khaki pants, or any variety of matching stripe/check/Hawaiian print, etc.  Admit it, we all see those combinations showing up on the holiday cards we receive each year… am I right? Autumn Light


“There is a particular kind of afternoon sun that exists only in autumn. A golden light drapes itself over the world of that hour. It falls through the afternoon sky, fine and faint as a swirl of smoke caught in the wind, nearly transparent. So sweet, that light, insisting softly, goldly against the windows.”

Meet the Ellsworth family:

  • 2 energetic young boys (ages 8 & 11)
  • 3 adorable little dogs (ages 1, 4 & 16!!)
  • 1 mom, whom I’ve known since the day she was born!
  • and, 1 low key & extremely tolerant dad 😉

I met up with this spirited family at Three Ponds Park in Cherry Hills Village last Saturday.  The weather was beautiful with mild fall temps and bright blue skies – perfect for picture-taking.  In fact, the weather was so perfect that we found ourselves surrounded by a slew of other families taking their own family portraits.  It was a virtual photographic festival at the park!
